LA Tech Week 2027: Dates & Founder's Guide
LA Tech Week 2027 runs September 13 to 19, a month earlier than 2026 and three weeks ahead of San Francisco. Here is the confirmed date, the platform change that breaks the old advice, and where in the city the week actually happens.
LA Tech Week 2027 runs September 13 to 19, 2027. a16z has published the date on its Los Angeles page, its homepage and its calendar page. As of November 2026 the calendar was not open, host submissions were not open, and no events were listed.
Two things changed from 2026 and both break advice written for the 2026 week. The week moved from mid-October to mid-September, so it now runs three weeks before San Francisco rather than the week after it. And the official calendar moved off Luma.
When is LA Tech Week 2027?
September 13 to 19, 2027. In 2026 the two West Coast weeks ran back to back, San Francisco on October 5 to 11 and Los Angeles on October 12 to 18, and plenty of people did both in a single trip. In 2027 they are three weeks apart. If that was your plan, it is now two trips.
| City | 2027 dates | Order |
|---|---|---|
| Boston | April 26 to May 2 | 1st |
| New York | June 7 to 13 | 2nd |
| Los Angeles | September 13 to 19 | 3rd |
| San Francisco | October 4 to 10 | 4th |
"a16z tells its own hosts where to be, and for Los Angeles the answer is the Westside. Density is the whole argument, because a sparse event is one people skip."
What changed for 2027
The registration surface. Through 2026, luma.com/latw was the place you browsed and applied. That calendar now reads "This calendar has been archived" and its upcoming tab is empty.
a16z has also put its 2026 calendars behind an email and password gate, so the old browsable archive of who hosted what is no longer public. Screenshot anything you need from the 2026 listings.
What the week is, and who runs it
Before the logistics, the three things that shape the week. How the format works, who hosts it, and how the seven days are actually loaded.
How Tech Week actually works
There is no central venue, no wristband and no single ticket. a16z calls it an unconference, meaning independent, community-created events across the city for seven days. You apply per event and each host approves you individually.
One more scheduling note straight from a16z's host guide, useful if you are hosting. Close-out events "often perform better on Fridays than Sundays".
Who hosts LA Tech Week
a16z's wall of past Los Angeles hosts is the best guide to 2027. Alongside the national names that travel to every city (Anthropic, Databricks, Stripe, Google, AWS, Adobe, Atlassian, HubSpot, Mercury, MongoDB, Eleven Labs, Deel, PwC, SAP, Fenwick) the LA-specific names tell you what the city is about. Mach Industries, Apex Space, Picogrid and Sift on the defense and hard-tech side, plus a16z speedrun and a16z Perennial.
Follow them now. The calendar opens close to the week, and hosts invite their own audiences before anything reaches it.
The shape of the week
We counted a16z's own 2026 Los Angeles calendar through the endpoint it publishes. 762 events in seven days, and they are not spread evenly.
Tuesday to Thursday carried 70% of the week. Sunday had 14 events against Tuesday's 199. If you can only come for part of it, come for the middle.
The crush is tighter than that, and a16z says so itself. Almost 300 of the 762 events started at 5 or 6 PM, and the host FAQ calls Tuesday to Thursday, 5 to 7 PM "the busiest Tech Week slot because most attendees are free then and often stack multiple events". The same page notes that breakfast and lunch have less competition. A quarter of the week starts before noon and almost nobody optimizes for it.
The practical read. Two events that both start at 6 PM in different neighborhoods are one event, because you will not make the second. Mornings are where the competition is not.
| Day | Events | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 93 | Ramp. The official kickoff lands here |
| Tuesday | 199 | The biggest day of the week |
| Wednesday | 161 | Dense |
| Thursday | 174 | Dense, and the El Segundo night |
| Friday | 76 | Halves. Close-out parties begin |
| Saturday | 45 | Hackathons |
| Sunday | 14 | Effectively over |
Where it happens, and the cluster nobody plans for
a16z tells hosts to be on the Westside, "primarily Santa Monica and Venice", and for once the calendar obeys. Of those 762 events, Santa Monica took 200 and Venice 91. Add Marina del Rey, Playa Vista, Westwood and Brentwood and the Westside is roughly half the week.
Downtown is a real but much smaller cluster at 62, with Culver City on 47 and Beverly Hills on 33. Only about one event in six needs a cross-town trip from the Westside at all, which is the argument for staying there.
Then there is El Segundo, with 25 events, and it is a different week. Fenwick's partners counted 16 of 40 defense-technology events there in 2026. The hosts are companies opening their own buildings. A robotics lab, a drone factory, a bonfire. If you are in defense, space or hardware, block a day for it and do not try to pair it with a Santa Monica evening.
One warning about the official calendar. The neighborhood chip is not reliable. One 2026 event was tagged Culver City while its own description placed it in Venice. Read the description, not the label.
Where LA Tech Week actually happens
a16z tells its hosts exactly where to be, and for Los Angeles the instruction is specific. It is the Westside, primarily Santa Monica and Venice. Its reasoning is attendance, not taste. Central clusters "create stronger density, better attendance, and lower attrition".
Worth knowing. a16z never names DTLA in that guidance, in either direction. The 2026 calendar still sprawled well past the Westside, with events in Mid-City, Hollywood, La Brea, Westwood and Google's Playa Vista campus. So the Westside is where the gravity is, not where the whole week is.
The practical consequence is scheduling, not geography. Crossing Los Angeles on a weekday evening is the thing that turns an ambitious plan into two events and a lot of traffic. Pick a neighborhood per evening and stay in it.
a16z also tells hosts which themes land in LA. The list is media, entertainment, gaming, consumer, wellness, defense, American dynamism, El Segundo hard tech, and beach and outdoor culture. That is a useful read on what the 2027 calendar will be weighted toward.
El Segundo, the cluster nobody plans for
a16z tells its hosts to be on the Westside, and the calendar mostly obeys. For one sector that guidance is actively wrong.
Fenwick's partners counted 16 of 40 defense-technology events at LA Tech Week 2026 in El Segundo, the aerospace strip by the airport. If you are building in defense, space or hardware, the Santa Monica to Downtown axis everyone else is optimizing is not your week. Their read on why is the industrial base rather than the tech scene. The region has over 250,000 workers with experience in defense hardware, robotics, space systems and advanced manufacturing. The anchors are JPL, USC, UCLA, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
It also explains who a16z lists as past LA hosts. Mach Industries, Apex Space and Picogrid are not media companies.
Getting around, where the train beats the car
This is the section that decides whether your week works, and the answer is not the one most LA advice gives.
The Metro E Line runs Downtown Santa Monica to 7th St/Metro Center in a scheduled 45 minutes, and that number does not move. Off Metro's own timetable, the 5:17 PM departure arrives 6:02, the 5:49 arrives 6:34, the 6:05 arrives 6:50. Trains leave every eight minutes through the evening peak. Culver City is the hinge at 19 minutes from Santa Monica and 26 minutes on to Downtown.
Driving is the opposite, and the cleanest proof comes from a bus operator rather than a traffic index. Big Blue Bus schedules the same eight-mile run down Lincoln Boulevard at 68 minutes at 5:50 PM and 35 minutes at 4:50 AM. That is the city telling you, in its own timetable, that the evening costs you 1.9 times the trip. INRIX put the average Los Angeles driver 87 hours behind in 2025.
Fares are trivial and capped automatically. A tap is $1.75, and Metro will never charge you more than $5 in a day or $18 across seven days, on a TAP card or straight off a phone, with nothing to register. Santa Monica's own Big Blue Bus is separate and cheaper still at $1.25 contactless, with a $16 seven-day pass.
LAX has a rail connection. Take the C or K Line to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, then a free shuttle to the terminals. From Santa Monica, the E Line reaches Expo/Crenshaw in a scheduled 24 minutes to pick up the K. Burbank markets itself as the convenient alternative and for Hollywood it probably is, but it publishes no drive times and no parking rates, so we are not going to repeat the claim as a fact.
If you do drive, Santa Monica publishes its own rate table and it is the one that will catch you. A downtown structure is $1 for the first 90 minutes, then $3, then $10, and $20 on a weekday once you pass five hours, $22 at a weekend. Downtown meters are $3 an hour. Beach lots in the central zone are $20 per entry in the April to October season, which includes September. And the city reserves a special event rate of up to $75. Set against a $5 daily cap on Metro, the car is the expensive way to attend a free event.
How to actually work the week
Point an AI assistant at the calendar. a16z publishes an endpoint for exactly this at tech-week.com/mcp, and its own suggested prompt is the one you want. Tell it when you land and when you fly out, and ask it to fill the gaps. Almost nobody uses it, and it is the fastest way through several hundred listings.
Then sort by neighborhood, not by time. dot.LA publishes its daily lineups grouped by area for exactly this reason, and it is the only filter that survives contact with LA traffic. Pick a cluster per evening and fill it.
The events are smaller than the hype suggests, which is good news. Verified 2026 sizes include 60 at a recruiting night, 50 to 60 at Civic Tech Day in Venice, 30 at a build competition, and 50 at an invite dinner. A 50-person room is where you actually meet someone.
Watch for the long formats. Mucker ran a single four-hour session as its Day 2 in 2026, four operators followed by two hours of building. Two of those and your day is gone, so book them deliberately rather than slotting them between other things.
The early slot is under-subscribed. Monday's first listings in 2026 began at 6 AM and Saturday's at 7 AM, mostly runs and wellness. Far fewer people make those than make the evening parties, which is the entire argument for going.
Skip the broad AI panel. AI was tagged on 419 of the 762 events, and panels were the second most common format. That intersection is the most crowded and least distinctive thing in the week, and a16z tells its own hosts to "avoid broad titles like 'AI event'". Take the hint as a filter.
On applications, read a16z's own host instructions from the other side. They tell hosts to expect 50 to 70%+ no-shows on free events and to approve roughly 2.5 to 3 times their target, to answer within seven days, and that rejected applicants are not notified automatically. So applying to more events than you can attend is the normal behavior the system is built around, silence usually means no, and a late application is not the lost cause it feels like. What you cannot do late is get into the invite-only dinners, which never open at all.
What it costs
The transport and coffee floor is genuinely cheap if you stay off the roads. A Metro day cap is $5, a week is $18, and breakfast at Gjusta in Venice, which is walkable from the Venice cluster, runs $12 for almond butter toast to $20 for the breakfast burrito. Call it $25 for a day of moving around the city and one meeting over food.
Driving the same day costs more and takes longer. A Downtown garage at its daily maximum is $40 on its own.
We are not going to print a hotel range. September 2027 is beyond the booking window most Los Angeles hotels have open, and a number quoted now would be a guess dressed as research. What we can say is that the Westside is the expensive side and Culver City sits between the two clusters at lower rates, and that the E Line makes a Culver City hotel genuinely workable in a way it would not be in most cities.
For a desk, WeWork publishes day passes at $39 at both 520 Broadway and 312 Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica, and at the same price at 222 Pacific Coast Highway in El Segundo, which is the one big-brand day desk inside that cluster. Playa Vista is $49. Industrious has day passes at 808 Wilshire in Santa Monica but does not publish the rate.
For coffee, GoodBoyBob at 2058 Broadway in Santa Monica opens at 7 AM and has the strongest reputation with this crowd, and Intelligentsia at 1331 Abbot Kinney is the Venice anchor, open daily from 6 AM. One warning that every other guide gets wrong. Caffe Luxxe on Montana Avenue has no wifi, deliberately. Its own site says so. It is a place to meet someone, not a place to work.
September in LA, and the fourteen degrees that matter
September is not autumn in Los Angeles. On NOAA's normals it is Downtown's second-warmest month, within a degree of August.
The number to plan around is the coastal split. The September normal high is 76F at LAX, which is the Santa Monica end, 83F downtown, and 90F in the west Valley. Fourteen degrees between where most of the week is and where some of it is. Nights are mild and near-identical everywhere at 63 to 64F, so an evening layer is for the sea breeze rather than the cold.
Rain is effectively zero. The September normal is about a tenth of an inch at every station we checked. If you are hosting anything outdoors, plan for heat and not for weather.
What else is in town that week
Three things sit on or beside the week, and one of them is in nobody else's guide.
UCLA's fall quarter begins on Monday September 20, 2027. That is the day after Tech Week closes, which makes its final weekend UCLA arrival weekend, on the Westside, in the same streets the week is held in. Westwood and the 405 are the places it will show. If you are flying out on the Sunday, leave early.
The Dodgers are at home to Toronto on September 13 to 15, the first three days of the week, and their final home game of the regular season is September 19, the last day. That is Elysian Park traffic mid-week and a full stadium on the closing Sunday.
The Emmys are in September 2027 and the date is not set. The 2026 ceremony was on September 14 at the Peacock Theater downtown, which would have landed squarely inside a September Tech Week. Check it before you book anything downtown for a Sunday evening.
The NFL schedule for 2027 will not exist until May, but the season is under way by mid-September, so assume a home game at SoFi on one of the weekend days and check in the spring.
LA Tech Week 2027 FAQ
When is LA Tech Week 2027?
September 13 to 19, 2027, a month earlier than the 2026 edition and three weeks ahead of San Francisco, reversing the 2026 order.
Is LA Tech Week free?
There is nothing to buy centrally. Individual hosts set their own terms and most events are free, which is why no-shows run so high and why hosts over-approve.
Where do I register for 2027?
Per event, on whatever page the host publishes, with the official listings running on Partiful for 2027. Until the calendar opens, the only live action is the notify form on a16z's LA page.
When does the 2027 calendar open?
Not announced. a16z says calendars open closer to each week. The 2026 LA calendar opened on September 8 for an October 12 start, roughly five weeks ahead, so late July or August 2027 is the window to watch. That is our read of last year, not an a16z statement.
Can I pitch at LA Tech Week?
At most Tech Week events, no. The stages that do appear are usually invite-only or tied to a fund's portfolio. At ours, yes. We ran our Los Angeles night five days before the 2026 week opened, deliberately, so founders arrived with the pitch already sharp, and we intend to do the same around September 13 to 19, 2027. That date is not published yet because the 2027 schedule is not set that far out. It will appear on our Los Angeles page when it is, and pitch applications are open the whole time. Next Los Angeles dates: Nov 4, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027.
Los Angeles the rest of the year
Tech Week is one week in September. The rest of the LA year is where most of the work gets done, and it is the part we run. 76 Los Angeles nights so far, with more than 3,400 people through them.
Same format every time. About five minutes of pitch from your own laptop, two or three minutes of live investor Q&A, networking before and after. Next Los Angeles dates: Nov 4, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027, with the full schedule on our Los Angeles page. If you want the 2026 record of how the week was built, our LA Tech Week 2026 guide still has the host list and the neighborhood map.
Next Los Angeles dates: Nov 4, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027. A 5-minute pitch, 2-3 minutes of live investor Q&A, and networking before and after.
