Boston Tech Week 2027: Dates & Founder's Guide

Boston Tech Week 2027 runs April 26 to May 2, and Boston opens a16z's four-city year. The date is confirmed on a16z's own site. Almost nothing else is, and this guide is honest about which is which.

Boston Tech Week 2027: Dates & Founder's Guide

Boston Tech Week 2027 runs April 26 to May 2, 2027. a16z has published the date four separate ways, including a downloadable calendar file. Host submissions are not open. The calendar is not open. No events are listed. As of November 2026 the only things you can do are save the week and leave an email on a16z's Boston page. The most useful planning fact is one a16z never mentions. The Boston Marathon lands the Monday before.

A week nobody has filled is the week you can still get a good venue for, which is the argument for reading this in November rather than in April.

When is Boston Tech Week 2027?

April 26 to May 2, 2027. Boston is the first of a16z's four Tech Weeks that year, about six weeks before New York. The date appears on a16z's Boston page, on its homepage under "2027 dates announced", on its calendar page, and inside the save-the-date file the Boston page serves, which encodes the week as starting April 26.

2026 was Boston's first edition, and it ran in late May. MIT Professional Education's listing says so in those words, "for the first time, a16z is bringing Tech Week to Boston", and dates it May 26 to 31 with 80+ founding hosts. So 2027 moves roughly a month earlier, and nothing about last year's shape safely transfers. a16z has published no reason for the move and we are not going to invent one. We attribute the 2026 dates to MIT rather than to a16z because a16z has walled its own Boston calendar behind an email and password gate.

"Boston goes first of the four cities, and the marathon clears out a full week before. The hard part of this trip is already solved for you."

What changed for 2027

The registration platform. This is the fact most guides will miss, because it only appears in a16z's host documentation rather than on the marketing pages.

For hosts the practical rules are published already. Each account may submit up to four events per city, co-hosted events do not count against that limit but declined ones do, and the Tech Week team reviews every proposal before an event is marketed under its umbrella. Event titles are expected to end with the city hashtag.

What the week is, and who runs it

Three things decide whether a Tech Week is worth the flight. What the format actually is, who turns up to host it, and what is already in the diary before a single 2027 event is announced.

How Tech Week actually works

It is not a conference you buy a ticket to. a16z calls it an unconference, "a citywide takeover where community-created events happen across the city over seven days instead of inside one centralized event site". There is no venue, no wristband and no single registration.

You apply to each event separately and each host approves you individually. a16z tells hosts to approve qualified applicants within seven days and warns that denied applicants are not notified automatically, so silence is a plausible no.

Who hosted Boston last time

a16z publishes a wall of past Boston hosts, and it is the best available guide to who will run something in 2027. The Boston-native names are the signal. Underscore VC, The Engine, Pillar, Glasswing Ventures, Matrix, Pear, Flybridge, Link Ventures, Alumni Ventures, C10 Labs and Cybernetix Ventures on the investor side, plus MassRobotics, Mass Ventures and the Mass Technology Leadership Council.

On the company side, DraftKings, Klaviyo, WHOOP, Wayfair, and the biotech names Cartography Biosciences, Dyno and 7AI. The national hosts that travel to every city also appear, including Anthropic, Databricks, Stripe, Google, AWS and HubSpot.

Follow those accounts now. Knowing which eleven local funds to watch is worth more than refreshing a calendar page, because hosts announce to their own lists first.

The one thing to put in your diary first

Before any Tech Week event is announced, there is already a fixture inside the week, and it is free.

Venture Cafe Cambridge runs a Thursday Gathering every week, 4:30 to 8:00 PM, at CIC, One Broadway, fifth floor. Its own FAQ puts it beyond doubt. "Thursday Gatherings will always remain free and open to everyone." Becoming a paying Venturer is optional and buys you nothing at the door. You can register ahead, but walk-ins are welcome.

April 29, 2027 is the only Thursday inside Tech Week. We cannot promise a gathering that day, because Venture Cafe publishes its calendar only a few months ahead, so check it closer to the time. But it has run weekly for years, it is across the street from the Red Line at Kendall, and the format is several concurrent sessions rather than one keynote. Entrepreneur-led talks, panels, workshops, one-to-one advising and demos, with a long networking window either side.

Practical detail that trips people up. Entry is through the concierge on the left side of the lobby with a government-issued photo ID, then you scan a QR code on the fifth floor and print your own name tag.

Getting in and getting around, which is Boston's real advantage

Boston is the one Tech Week city where you should not rent a car, and that is provable rather than a matter of taste.

Logan to the Seaport is a single free bus ride. Massport states it plainly. "The trip from the airport to downtown Boston is free." The Silver Line SL1 picks up curbside at every terminal, and the Seaport stops at World Trade Center and Courthouse come before South Station on the inbound run. Terminal A to South Station is a scheduled 12 minutes.

Logan to Kendall Square is about 25 to 30 minutes, free on the SL1 as far as South Station and then six or seven minutes on the Red Line, for a single $2.40 fare. The Blue Line route works too but costs you three lines and two transfers, so the Silver Line is the one.

Kendall Square to the Seaport in the evening is about 20 to 25 minutes. Red Line trains leave Kendall every three to six minutes at 6 PM, and the SL1 runs South Station to World Trade Center in eight minutes, every six to eight minutes.

You can also stay out late. The last Red Line trains from Kendall are 00:42 and 00:51, and the SL1 runs from 5:43 AM to 1:12 AM, so a midnight finish in the Seaport and an early flight are both covered without a cab.

Buy a 7-day pass. It costs $22.50 against $2.40 a ride. Three or four journeys a day across five days is 15 to 20 fares, so the pass saves roughly $14 to $26 and removes every decision at the gate. One catch worth knowing. Contactless tap-to-pay does not work with daily or weekly passes, so you need a CharlieTicket, which any station sells. Since September 2026 a single fare also covers unlimited transfers within two hours, so a Red Line plus Silver Line journey is one tap, not two.

For short hops, Bluebikes is $3.00 for a single 30-minute ride or $11.99 for a day pass. And some of the journeys people take the train for are walks. South Station to the World Trade Center is about 15 minutes on foot, and you can cross from Kendall into Boston over the Longfellow Bridge in roughly 20.

Where to stay, and the week the marathon is not in the way

Two sourced facts settle this better than any opinion.

The Boston Marathon is not your problem. The 2027 race is Monday April 19 and its expo leaves the Hynes on April 18, a full week before Tech Week opens. The marathon crowd is gone before you land.

The convention calendar is your problem, and it points at the Seaport. During Tech Week the Hynes in Back Bay hosts two conferences, TIDES and SecureWorld, both in the table above. The Seaport's much larger BCEC has nothing booked for the whole of Tech Week. If you want a room with slack in it, that is a reason to look at the Seaport rather than Back Bay, and it is a reason you can check rather than take on trust.

Now the neighborhoods. Kendall Square puts you across the street from the Thursday Gathering and inside the densest concentration of the people you came for. The Seaport is newer, roomier that week, and one free bus from the airport. Back Bay is central and well connected but it is the squeezed one. We are not printing nightly rates, because April 2027 is beyond most hotels' booking windows and a number quoted now would be a guess wearing a suit.

Packing for a month that cannot make up its mind

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Logan put the Tech Week window at a high around 60F (16C) and a low around 45F (7C), with roughly a 38% chance of measurable rain on any given day.

The average is close to useless on its own, and here is the proof. On April 29, the same calendar day, Boston reached 79F (26C) in 2025 and only 50F (10C) in 2026. A 29-degree swing between consecutive years, at the same weather station.

So pack layers rather than one warm coat, bring something short-sleeved as well as something warm for a 45-degree evening, and carry a compact shell. In 2023 a single day in this window dropped nearly two inches of rain, and Boston has a great deal of wet brick sidewalk.

Boston's best weeks are in autumn, and you should know that

If you are choosing when to come to Boston rather than whether to come to Tech Week, the honest answer is that April is Boston's newest and thinnest tech week.

The Engine runs Tough Tech Week in late October, and its 2025 edition drew more than 3,290 founders across 65+ events. Startup Boston Week ran in September in its tenth year. Klaviyo's K:BOS is September, Greentown's Climatetech Summit is October, and South X Southie, an open-RSVP party co-hosted by six Boston funds at once, is August. None of those is announced for 2027 yet, but all of them are established and all of them are autumn.

One change matters for April specifically. Robotics Invest, which anchored a visible slice of the 2026 Tech Week program, has already dated its 2027 edition for June 1 and 2. The robotics track that made last year's Boston week distinctive should not be assumed to ride along in April.

That is not an argument against coming. It is an argument for knowing what you are coming to. A young, growing week, in a city whose deepest startup programming happens five months later.

Is Boston the right week for you? An honest answer

For some founders this is the best of the four weeks. For others it is the wrong city, and the guides that will not say so are wasting your flight.

Boston is not merely strong in life sciences, it is dominant. MassBio's 2026 figures say it. Massachusetts companies took 25% of all US biopharma venture funding in the first half of 2026, the state leads the nation in NIH funding per capita at 9.3% of all NIH money, and it holds 17% of the national drug pipeline. The honest counterweight from the same source is that the biopharma workforce contracted 3.1% in 2025 and NIH award counts fell 6.2%. It is the biggest cluster in the country, and on 2025 figures it is shrinking.

Deep tech is the other real one. The Engine runs 227,000 square feet of wet lab and engineering space with more than 150 resident companies, and its Blueprint alumni have raised $480M between them. Fusion, long-duration storage and lithium extraction are not things you fund from a consumer thesis.

Now the size of it, honestly. NVCA's Q3 2026 Venture Monitor puts Boston at 188 deals and $5.7B for the quarter, against the Bay Area's 766 deals and $40.7B and New York's 478 and $11.4B. Boston is roughly a quarter of the Bay Area's deal count and about a seventh of its dollars, and it sits behind New York on both. That is the gap, from the industry's own report. Then read how the Boston funds describe themselves and a pattern appears. Glasswing says enterprise and security. .406 says healthcare, data, AI and cybersecurity. Underscore says enterprise, insurtech, vertical SaaS, security and commerce. Pillar says AI, biotech, healthtech and deep tech. Third Rock is life sciences. Not one of them leads with consumer. General Catalyst, founded in Cambridge, listed six global offices in November 2026 and Cambridge was not among them.

So if you are building enterprise software, security, healthtech, biotech, robotics, climate or hard tech, Boston that week is a top-tier use of a flight. The capital and the research institutions sit inside a twenty-minute subway ride of each other. If you are building a consumer app, a crypto product or a pure foundation-model play, you will meet superb researchers and very few people who write your kind of check.

Here is the case that flips it entirely. If your customer is a hospital system, a pharma company, a university or an enterprise headquartered in Massachusetts, this is a sales trip wearing a Tech Week badge, and that is a better reason to come than fundraising.

01

Pillar VC

10 St James Ave, Boston · Seed and inception · Fund IV, $175M · Open route on their site

AI, biotech, healthtech and deep tech. Portfolio includes Abridge, PathAI and Asimov. One of the few seed funds anywhere that publishes an open inbound route rather than insisting on a warm intro.

02

Underscore VC

131 Oliver St, Boston · Pre-seed and seed · Enterprise, vertical SaaS, security · hello@underscore.vc

A Boston Tech Week host in its own right, and another with a published inbound address rather than a form that goes nowhere.

275 Newbury St, Boston · AI and frontier tech for enterprise and security · Fund III, $200M+

The clearest answer to "is there AI money in Boston". It is here, and it is pointed at enterprise and security rather than at consumer models.

04

The Engine

Tough tech incubator, MIT-founded · 150+ resident companies · 227,000 sq ft of lab and workshop

A past Boston Tech Week host and the physical center of the city's hard-tech scene. Note its own Tough Tech Week runs in late October, so you will not catch that during Tech Week.

How to work the week

Read a16z's instructions to its hosts from the other side and the application game becomes obvious. Hosts are told to expect 50 to 70%+ no-shows on free events and to approve roughly 2.5 to 3 times their target, to answer within seven days, and that rejected applicants are not notified automatically.

That means applying to more than you can attend is the behavior the system is designed around, silence usually means no, and a late application is not the lost cause it feels like. What you cannot fix late is an invite-only dinner, which never opens.

Two Boston-specific additions. The universities run public events all week regardless of Tech Week. MIT's calendar has an audience filter that includes Public, and much of it is free. And because the whole city is twenty minutes wide on the Red Line, you can realistically do a Kendall afternoon and a Seaport evening in a way that is simply not possible in Los Angeles.

Four figures from a16z's host guide. A 50 to 70% no-show rate, 2.5 to 3x over-approval, seven days to hear back, and four events per host per city.
a16z's own host numbers, read from the attendee's side.

Working from Boston for a week

Day passes at CIC start from $60 and put you in the building where the Thursday Gathering happens. Workbar starts at $59 a day with locations in Back Bay, Downtown, Central Square and Harvard Square.

The free option is genuinely good. Cambridge Public Library at 449 Broadway is open 9 AM to 9 PM Monday to Thursday, quiet, and asks nothing of you.

One timing trap worth knowing. Kendall Square is a daytime neighborhood. Tatte on Main Street closes at 3 PM on weekdays and does not open at weekends, and 1369 Coffee House also stops at 3. After about six in the evening Kendall narrows to a handful of rooms, State Park under One Kendall Square being the latest at 1 AM midweek. The Seaport and Harvard Square keep a full set of places open much later. Do your Kendall coffee meetings before three.

For an evening meeting in the Seaport, Trillium Fort Point at 50 Thomson Place has a rooftop deck and takes reservations for up to eight people as much as two weeks ahead, which is the detail that matters when every other table in the neighborhood is taken.

One more correction to the older Boston guides. MassChallenge lists no Boston events at all on its own calendar, only London and Switzerland. Together with HUBweek, that is two staples of every pre-2025 Boston list that will send you nowhere.

What else is happening in Boston that week

Start with the one that is confirmed, free and open to anyone. The MassRobotics Robot Block Party runs Saturday May 1, 2027, 11 AM to 4 PM at Sowa Power Station, 88 Seaport Boulevard, with a sidewalk robot parade at 10:45. Fifty or more companies, universities and student teams, free tickets, no affiliation needed. It is the ninth edition and it is the single most reliable thing in the whole week, because it is already dated while the Tech Week calendar is not.

Three of the four events in the table fall inside the window. The one that matters most for your hotel is not in it at all, and it lands the week before.

The Boston Marathon is Monday, April 19, 2027, the week before Tech Week, with its expo holding the Hynes from April 15 to 18. Boston hotel pricing does not recover instantly from marathon weekend. If you are flying in, book before you have a calendar to plan around, because the calendar will not open until much closer to the week.

The Boston startup calendar that is already dated

Tech Week is one week. These are the Boston deadlines that were live when we checked the organizers' own pages in November 2026.

Techstars Boston closes applications on November 18, 2026, for a program starting March 8, 2027, with its demo day on June 3, 2027. The Harvard President's Innovation Challenge takes applications until December 8, 2026, with more than $500K in prizes from the Bertarelli Foundation and tracks open to students across all thirteen Harvard schools. MIT delta v runs on a spring cycle, with $75K equity-free per team.

Two corrections worth having, because both circulate as facts. HUBweek is gone, and its domain now redirects to a Boston Globe section with no future date. And Y Combinator has no Boston presence. Its own pages say the batch is in San Francisco and mention no other city.

Free, weekly on Thursdays, 4:30 PM · CIC Cambridge, One Broadway · Runs year round, not just Tech Week

The most reliable weekly gathering in Cambridge, and free. If you are in Boston on a Thursday for any reason, this is the lowest-effort way to meet people. It runs whether or not there is a Tech Week, though it skips the odd holiday week.

02

Greentown Labs

444 Somerville Ave, Somerville · Climatetech, around 200 startups · Nonprofit, membership open

North America's best-known climatetech incubator, and a Tech Week host. Note the domain moved. greentownlabs.com now redirects to greentown.org.

03

MassRobotics

12 Channel Street, Seaport · Robotics and physical AI · Hosted during Boston Tech Week

Calls itself the world's largest independent robotics hub, and runs the Robot Block Party that falls on the Saturday of Tech Week 2027.

April 26 to May 2, 2027 · First of the four 2027 cities

April 26 to May 2, 2027, confirmed on a16z's own Boston page and in the calendar file it serves.

02

Is it free?

No central ticket exists · Most individual events are free · Some are invite-only

There is no Tech Week ticket to buy. Individual events set their own terms and most are free, which is exactly why no-show rates run so high.

03

When does the 2027 calendar open?

Not announced · a16z: "calendars open closer to each week" · Watch the Boston page

Not announced. When we checked in November 2026 a16z's host portal listed every 2027 city as not open, with deadlines "coming soon". Leave your email on the Boston page and it will tell you directly.

04

How do I host an event?

Up to 4 events per account per city · Build it on Partiful · Co-hosted events do not count

Through a16z's host form once it opens, with the event built on the Tech Week Partiful template. Co-hosted events do not count against your four, declined ones do.

05

Can I pitch at Boston Tech Week?

Yes, at ours · We ran inside the 2026 week · Date published closer to the time

At most Tech Week events, no. It is built from talks, demos, dinners and mixers rather than open stages. At ours, yes. We ran a Boston night on the Wednesday of Tech Week 2026 and we intend to run one again during April 26 to May 2, 2027. That date is not published yet because the 2027 schedule is not set that far out. It will appear on our Boston page when it is, and pitch applications are open the whole time. Next Boston dates: Nov 5, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027.

Boston the rest of the year

Tech Week is one week a year. The rest of the year is the part we work in. We have run 39 Boston nights with more than 1,800 people through them, and they run on a steady monthly rhythm rather than once every spring.

The format is the same every time. Founders pitch for about five minutes from their own laptop, the audience of investors, operators and engineers asks questions for two or three minutes, and the networking runs before and after. Next Boston dates: Nov 5, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027. The full schedule lives on our Boston page.

Pitch at our next Boston night

Next Boston dates: Nov 5, Dec 2 and Jan 6, 2027. A 5-minute pitch, 2-3 minutes of live investor Q&A, and networking before and after.
