Runners retire expensive shoes on a forty-year-old rule of thumb that ignores the runner completely, binning good shoes early or running injured on dead ones. mylz threads a sensor into each shoelace and measures how the shoe wears and how you move in it, so the call is made on data.
The advice to replace running shoes every 500 miles is older than most of the people following it, and it says nothing about the runner. Replace too early and you throw away hundreds of good kilometres; too late and you are running on hardened cushioning, which research has linked to a materially higher injury rate.
mylz measures both halves at once, the shoe and the gait, from a sensor small enough to thread into a lace. The engineering is the moat here: custom hardware, on-device gait firmware and a cloud pipeline, with independent biomechanics validation lined up against force-plate ground truth.
